SCYSL offers a Fall Recreational soccer program for boys and girls from the Under 6 to Under 14 age groups. The Recreational Soccer season runs from August through November, and registration takes place during the month of May. Regardless of skill or past playing experience, all players receive equal playing time, and sportsmanship is emphasized throughout our program. SCYSL also supports Class 3 "Comp" and Class 1 "Select" soccer teams from Under 8 through Under 19 age groups. Competitive teams typically compete year-round and tryouts are normally held to select players. SCYSL competitive teams compete in local soccer leagues and touraments within the Bay Area. Our league is also affiliated with the Santa Clara Sporting Club which provides competitive soccer at the highest levels. Their teams compete in both local and Regional leagues, and compete in tournaments across California and sometimes the Western Region of the US.

Birth certificate not required for coaches. Only returning players within the past three years may forego submitting a birth certificate. However, one may be requested later if the Registrar cannot verify the information.

2. Current PHOTO to be used for player passes. PHOTO HEADSHOT MUST BE APPROXIMATELY 1 inch x 1.5 inches! Larger photos, Polaroid, poor quality printed, or any previously laminated pictures will be rejected. The player must NOT be wearing any type of hat, scarf or sunglasses. Only players in our U10 and younger groups may forgo submitting a picture.

3. FEES: Fees for recreational players include: Registration, uniform shirt, shorts and socks, trophy and picture package. Any registration completed after June 9th will be assessed a $20 late fee. Also, a $40.00 refundable Volunteer Participation Fee will be collected from each family. Persons submitting a coach’s application at the time of registration are exempt from this volunteer fee. Premier Soccer Coaching is host three Summer Soccer Camps. The camps are open to players of all ages and abilities and are designed to improve players individual skill such as dribbling, passing, shooting, receiving and footwork, as well as improving players tactical understanding of the game of soccer.

Players will receive high level coaching for coach John Slegg and his Premier Soccer Coaching Staff. John has over 10 years of experience with coaching youth soccer and running soccer camps. John has coached some very high level team in Santa Clara Sporting and has worked with players that have gone on to play college soccer and for the State, Regional and National team.

Some of the above information needs is required for your USSF registration and is kept confidential.

Before you take the exam, you will also need to bring a separate check for each attendee for $40 payable to “CNRA”. This covers your annual registration with the USSF. Please bring it to the first class session. If you do not pass the exam at the end of the class, this check will be returned to you.

Attendance will be taken at all sessions. In addition to the 6 classes that are set aside for USSF Instructor presentations of the Laws of the Game, we have scheduled a field clinic on August 12. This session will focus on taking the theory from the class and applying it in the real world – out on the field. The goal of our new training format is to send new referees to their first league games as JOB READY as possible. In addition, there will be 1-2 dates where you will officiate in Mentor-supervised scrimmage games prior to the start of the Fall Season. Dates will be announced, and this is part of the required training. Attendance at these additional sessions is mandatory for students wishing to officiate games for SCYSL, but students who do not intend to officiate with us do not have to attend the additional sessions. Because these sessions are required (for SCYSL referees), I must receive advance notice of any attendance scheduling conflicts as we have a firm policy of ’make-up’ sessions planned for such contingencies.

The Santa Clara Sporting Club held their annual Goals for a Cure donation ceremony on February 10, 2012, and the club donated $30,000 to the El Camino Hospital to fight breast cancer. The Santa Clara Sporting Club has now raised over $94,000 since Goals for a Cure since 2008. Santa Clara Sporting President, Sebastian Goncalves, the Sporting 95 Boys White Team and Cecelia Hinz attended to hand the $30,000 check to Lea Morgan from El Camino Hospital. The Santa Claea Sporting 95 Boys White Team raised over $3,000 last October, and Cecelia Hinz raised over $1,000 on her own to lead the club’s fundraising efforts.

Matteo Studios and the Santa Clara Sporting Club launched Goals-for-a-Cure during the month of October 2008, to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. All Santa Clara Sporting Teams participate in a Goal-A-Thon Fundraiser during the month of October, and the club raised over $94,000 to fight breast cancer between 2008-2011. The funds raised were used to support women who need financial assistance to get a breast screen exam at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. Student athletes from Santa Clara University handed-out SCYSL Scholar Athlete Awards last year

Register and join us at the 2011-12 SCYSL Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony in March. Every season, we highlight the importance of education within our soccer community, and celebrate the success of our student athletes off the field through the SCYSL Scholar Athlete Award. Improving one’s soccer game is fun and rewarding, but of more importance is the need to have a strong academic foundation. Our league launched the Scholar Athlete Program years ago to recognize those players in our league that receive academic honors (B average or higher) during the playing season. The program is open to all SCYSL players from the kindergartner grade through high school. Players recognized as Scholar Athletes will receive a medal, certificate and a bumper sticker during a ceremony to recognize each student-athlete.

Players in grades kindergartner through twelfth are eligible for the Scholar Athlete Award. In order for eligible players to receive the award a player must receive a B average or higher on a report card during the fall season. A current report card or a completed Verification of Academic Excellence Form must be submitted.

The Santa Clara Vipers Girls U10 soccer team were crowned champions at the North Valley December Classic Soccer Tournament held December 3rd-4th in Milpitas. The U10 girls division was divided into two brackets of three teams each. After three games, the top two ranked teams on point totals from each bracket would play a fourth game to determine first and second place finishes. The Vipers played their first game on Saturday at 11am; they easily won 5-0. Their second game at 2pm was against the MYSC Dragonflies, who hadn’t lost a game all season, and also won their first tournament game. After a tough-fought match, Santa Clara pulled out a 1-0 victory. At that point, the Vipers had earned 18 points, but weren’t guaranteed to play in the Finals until they played their third game on Sunday.

On the second day of the tournament, they competed against the NV Chicks With Kicks Team, and beat them 4-1 to earn the right to play in the 2 o’clock championship match. It turned-out that the Vipers got to play against a fellow Santa Clara team, called the Pink Panthers, who were competitive all season long. After another hard-fought game, the Vipers prevailed 5-1 to win first place for their bracket. The team only gave-up two goals during the entire tournament! The majority of this team has played together for a couple of years now, and they are truly a great team in every sense of the word. 

Congratulations to all the players, and head coach Eddie Laranjo, and assistant coaches Frank Nunes and Brandon Paris.

The Santa Clara Fusion Girls U14 soccer team were Finalists at the North Valley December Classic Soccer Tournament held December 3rd-4th in Milpitas. The U14 girls bracket had four teams competing in the tournament, so every team would play every team once, and then total points earned would determine first, second, and third place.  The Fusion started the tournament on Saturday, winning their first 8:30am game (burr cold!) by a 1-0 score.  Later that afternoon at 3pm, the Fusion faced a team that beat Santa Clara 1-4 during regular season competition, but the Fusion girls turned the result around this time and won 1-0.  The U14 Fusion girls knew they were headed into their final game on Sunday that would determine a first or second place result in the event because Sunday’s opponent, the CV Hot Tamales had also won both of their games.  

The Hot Tamales Team had a one point edge over Santa Clara leading up to the Final match, and the Fusion knew they had to win to earn a first place result.  The championship match was well played by both teams, and the Fusion took a 1-0 lead at halftime, but the CV Hot Tamples tied-up the game in the second half, and that score would stand.  Both teams earned four more points, but the Hot Tamales had that one point lead prior to the championship, so the Fusion earned a well-fought 2nd Place Finalist result.  The game was well-played by both teams, and the game could have gone either way. Giving-up only one goal the entire tournament, and winning two games and tieing one is very impressive! They deserved first place just as easily as the Hot Tamales. 

Congratulations to the players, and head coach Eddie Laranjo and assistant coaches Art Patlan and Dean Hartmann for a great season!

The Santa Clara Strikers ’96 U15 Boys team competed in the District II Fall Cup on October 22nd-23rd advancing to the finals after scoring eight goals and only allowing two goals in their three qualifying games. The team faced the Almaden Valley United team and won a hard fought championship in hot weather by the score of 2-0, winning the Bronze Division and posting its 3rd shutout in four games. Congratulations to the team for a great tournament!

The Santa Clara Fire U11boys team participated in the Soccer by the Bay last weekend in San Mateo. With allowing only 3 goals and scoring 14 in 4 games, Santa Clara Fire took first place overall in the bronze division. Fire also had two shutouts during their 4-0-0 championship run and faced a tough Peninsula Hawks team for the final. Way to go FIRE!

The 12th Annual Santa Clara Rotary Cup is now accepting 2012 Tournament applications for their August 18-19th event hosted in Santa Clara. This is a great local soccer tournament for Silver, Bronze, and Copper competitive teams (formerly Class 3), and it's right in our backyard. They accept CYSA and US Club teams, with up to four guest players

The 2012 tournament will have 13 age brackets:

• Girls, U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19
• Boys, U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16
• All games for 2012 will be 30 minute halves

Games  - prior to the start of each game, all referees are required to evaluate field conditions and determine whether a game can safely be played. Unless it has been raining steadily the night prior to, and morning of the game, coaches should expect to arrive at your scheduled game. Referees will make a decision on the safety to play or not. If there is rain, and a threat of thunder and lightning after the game has started, referees and coaches should immediately end the game.  

In the event games are cancelled on Friday night, recreation age group coordinators will contact coaches that night to inform coaches Saturday games have been cancelled.

Note: Even though the City may allow games to be played at theSoccerPark the referee in his/her opinion may decide to cancel the game due to inclement weather.
