Santa Clara Lions 08B Black Crowned MVLA Cup Champions

Nov 6, 2017

Congratulations to the Santa Clara Lions 08Boys Black Team who were crowned 2017 MVLA Fall Cup Champions over the weekend.

On Saturday they opened up tournament play with a dominating display of soccer skills to defeat a team from Cupertino with a lopsided 7-1 score. The Lions almost kept a clean sheet until their goal keeper gave up one goal when he stopped a shot right to his foot, but it popped over his own head and watched it bounce on the line into his net.

During their second game, Santa Clara faced a strong MVLA Team "under the lights" in a fun night game; the boys loved the atmosphere. The MVLA Team brought some guest players to back their defense and goal, and found a goal to end the first half with a 1-0 lead over the Lions. In the second-half Santa Clara needed something special to win or tie to advance to the playoffs, and Noah McIntosh notched the equalizer goal with a shot late in the game.

The Lions Team were sitting in second place going into Sunday, but delivered a knock-out punch when they beat the Sunnyvale Les Pettite Blues Team 6-0. In the other game, the Cupertino Team scored twice on MVLA which put the Lions in first place with a one goal differential over MVLA.

The Under-8 Boys Championship game was set against an Alpine Strikers Team that went 3 wins and 0 losses during bracket play. Alpine only had one substitution but all their players were big boys. Noah opened-up the scoring for the Lions and this gave the team confidence. Santa Clara's second goal came from Brandon and every player brought lots of energy to the game. Alpine got physical in the second half, but just couldn't keep up with the Lion's relentless pressure, speed or play, and good defensive tackles.

Santa Clara won 3-0 only giving up 4 or 5 shots to Alpine but kept a clean sheet. It could have been a thumping when the Lions pinged a few shots off the goal post or when they missed shots by inches. Their goalie made several great saves.

The championship was a hard-earned and well deserved win.

Congratulations to the players, parents and Coaches Steve Redondo and Timo McIntosh!
